Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers, 809 Center Street, Santa Cruz,

The Historic Preservation Commission meeting for December 20, 2017, is canceled.  The next regularly scheduled meeting is January 17, 2018.

The Historic Preservation Commission shall have power and be required to:

Santa Cruz City Hall

  • Draft and recommend measures to implement the historic preservation plan, including an historic building plan and historic preservation ordinance, to the City Council;
  • Perform such other administrative and advisory functions as may from time to time be delegated to the Commission by ordinance or resolution.


The Commission consists of seven members (see Meeting Information link below) appointed by the City Council. Members should have degrees or experience in architecture, history, archaeology, or planning.

Economic Benefits:

OHP staff are often asked for information about the economic benefits of historic preservation. Although California has not yet funded the type of studies many other states have done and we lack the facts and analysis to put a dollar value on preservation in California, we can draw upon the wealth of studies and information available from other states and local jurisdictions.
